I love talking about emotions and helping people get better at working with them. I’ve taken numerous clients through this entire growth process, and it has really made a difference in their lives. Here are the first 5 items I consider part of emotional intelligence:
1. Are aware you are having an emotion
2. Can name the emotion with an emotion word
3. Are aware where this emotion came from
4. Understand why it bothers/delights you
5. Aware of where you feel this emotion in your body as a sensation
As I go through all 11 items they get more complex and involve more personal awareness. Adding each of these skills also increases your problem solving skills, communication skills, relationships and therefore makes your life much easier to live and more enjoyable!
I also touch on some information from the book I’m featuring in this month’s Book Club Program, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents. At the very end of the book, she lists out what to look out for as clues of an emotionally mature person. She lists just 3 things, but gives several detailed rich expressions of behaviors that hold up that ability. Here are the 3 things:
I hope you learned so much about yourself today and can give yourself a pat on the back for what you DO know and are aware of another step you can take on your path to additional emotional intelligence and maturity.
